11 Byker was one of the first major attempts in Britain to create a dialogue between community and architecture. Erskine oversaw the development of this famous project allowing for tenant cooperation and architectural innovation on a large scale to provide housing protected from motorway noise and the rebuilding of a whole estate near the city centre.
